As of 1 August, Karstein Jenssen has taken on the role of Head of Product Management for aquaculture at Oceanbox.
He joins Oceanbox from his position as Technology Consultant at Lerøy Seafood Group, where he has spent the past 10 years working with the operation and implementation of new technologies across the group and at Lerøy Aurora. Among other things, he has been a key contributor to the development of Lerøy Aurora’s growth center, which supports the company’s farming sites in Northern Norway.
“I am excited to take on the challenge of developing new products at Oceanbox that will create value for the aquaculture industry through increased efficiency, improved fish welfare, and greater control over environmental impacts. I believe there is significant potential in developing a better understanding of how the industry affects the environment, both locally and regionally, through improved access to data and simulations, as well as shared insights that enable all stakeholders to discuss the facts and make evidence-based decisions,” says Jenssen.

At Lerøy, Karstein has played a key role in ensuring the reliable and effective use of technology, particularly at Lerøy Aurora, and in recent years across Lerøy Seafood Group as a whole. Through this work, he has developed strong expertise in identifying which technologies work across all parts of the production chain, both within Lerøy and among its partners. He is highly focused on efficiency and robustness in technical solutions that help safeguard significant assets in weather-exposed areas along the Norwegian coast.
Oceanbox CEO Svenn Hanssen is very pleased with the company’s new recruit.
“Karstein has known Oceanbox well from the very beginning, both as an investor and as a board member, and has been a valuable sounding board for the company in understanding what it takes for the aquaculture industry to adopt new technology. The fact that he has chosen to join us is a great vote of confidence, particularly because I know he was very happy in his role at Lerøy. He is also joining the company at an important time, as we are about to establish an entirely new product line focused on forecasting. I know Karstein as someone with tremendous enthusiasm, a strong understanding of technology, an exceptional instinct for what works, and an enormous capacity for hard work – exactly what we are looking for,” says Hanssen.
Oceanbox develops digital tools that provide a completely new understanding of the dynamics of coastal waters. Through advanced ocean modelling and simulations, the company has developed a tool that enables the aquaculture industry to make better-informed decisions, operate with greater predictability, and improve safety.
“Oceanbox provides insight into what is happening beneath the surface, giving fish farmers the opportunity to understand the ocean around them and their farming sites in an entirely new way. These are tools with enormous potential, and I am incredibly excited to be part of developing them further,” Jenssen concludes.
Jenssen will be based at Oceanbox’s office in Tromsø.
